Random field theory

A smooth random field is like the surface of a swimming pool after splashing around, smooth waves higher in some places and lower in others. Random fields are probability models for noise in smooth images, such as functional MRI images of the brain or temperature fields over the earth. We study properties of these fields such as the distribution of the height of local maxima, and use these properties to inform the statistical analysis of smooth images.
