Mentoring

Prospective students outside of UCSD:
Due to limited capacity, I can only work with students affiliated with UCSD. If you are interested in working with me at UCSD, please apply to one of the BS, MS or PhD programs in Data Science or Biostatistics. You may mention my name in your application. Note, however, that all admissions are decided centrally by a formal selection process. For postdoc positions, please check in the Posts page if a position is advertised.

Prospective students at UCSD:
If you are affiliated with UCSD and want to work with me, you may apply to be a member of our research group by sending me an email including:
  • Your updated CV and academic transcript (official or unofficial)
  • A brief statement describing your research interests and whether you lean more toward theory or applications.
  • An example of your technical writing, e.g. a publication or a class project report.
  • A title and brief description of what you would like to present in our group meeting.
If selected, you will be invited to give a short presentation on previous work of yours at our weekly research group meeting. From there, discussions may continue to find a suitable project. Keep in mind that there is a limited capacity to the group, and that funding depends on availability and is not guaranteed.

Mentoring:
For those interested in working with me or already working with me, I like to have an open and engaged mentoring style, sometimes more hands on and sometimes more hands off. Some skills and attitudes are important. I expect members of my group to:
  • Know how to do math: probability, statistics, linear algebra, perform derivations and formal proofs
  • Know how to write: clearly and succinctly, with enough detail but not verbose, with correct English grammar
  • Know how to program: in R, Python and/or Matlab
  • Know how to speak: give articulate presentations, focusing on the important messages, with enough detail but not too long
  • Produce good graphics: plots and illustrative figures that convey compelling messages, with proper labels
  • Read: search literature, read papers in the field
  • Be independent: take ownership of the work
  • Be organized: track the tasks completed and the follow-up steps, be diligent to summarize progress in written form
  • Be committed: be excited about the work, make substantial progress every week, put in your best effort
  • Be curious: ask questions!
